Beginnings; Detroit Democratic Club
The Detroit Democratic Club, founded by the late Honorable Coleman Alexander Young, Sr., primary objective is to ensure that all citizens of Detroit are registered voters. Voters are encouraged to vote in every election: local, state, and national. Mr. Young is quoted as saying; “ Citizens should never give up their right to vote. To vote is a very important element of an individual’s right. When citizens do not vote, they give up their choice to select leaders who are responsible to them. We must make a pledge to ourselves, which is to vote in every election, local, state, and national.
The late Honorable Coleman Alexander Young Sr. is also noted to say, “The city of Detroit can elect the governor of the state of Michigan. It is so simple for Detroit’s citizens. It does not take a lot of time. All we need to do is get up, go to the polls, and vote. We are counted when we vote. It changes our way of life; our vote makes our lives better.”
The late Honorable Coleman Alexander Young Sr. always kept himself close to his precinct delegates. He recognized the role precinct delegates could play as we work to get citizens to the polls.
Like the Honorable Coleman Alexander Young, Sr., former President Bill Clinton recognized the power of the vote. He stated that he saw no reason why Democrats have such a problem in getting a Democrat elected. This is especially true in that Democrats out-number Republicans two to one.
